Government Makes Changes To Management For Priority Projects

The UK government has announced that it is overhauling the Government Major Projects Portfolio (GMPP), which includes the most high impact and strategically important projects being funded by the government.

In its announcement, the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) stated that the current GMPP portfolio which stands at over 200 projects will be reduced by more than half to around 80.

However, this doesn’t mean that over 100 projects are being cancelled, simply that oversight of those projects will now sit with the departments and delivery bodies best placed to lead them, rather than with the centralised NISTA.

The projects now included in the GMPP must not only meet a strategic government priority, but must also have a total lifetime cost of over £1 billion and be one that would benefit from both central support and scrutiny.

Among the large-scale infrastructure projects that will remain under the oversight of NISTA are the Sizewell C nuclear plant, Northern Powerhouse Rail, HS2 Phase 1 and the social housing decarbonisation fund.

Meanwhile, government figures show that output from the country’s construction industry fell for the fourth consecutive quarter between January and March this year.

The sector that experienced the biggest decline was that of private new housing, with output here falling by over six per cent in the first quarter of 2026.

This is despite the fact that it’s estimated that the UK’s housebuilding industry needs to deliver hundreds of thousands of new homes each year to keep pace with demand.
